How to use the JPG to WebP Converter
WebP was designed as a more efficient replacement for JPEG: at a similar visual quality it typically produces a smaller file. For a site with many photos, switching from JPG to WebP reduces page weight and bandwidth with no visible change for visitors. This converter re-encodes your JPG as WebP locally in the browser.
- 1Drop your .jpg or .jpeg file onto the converter or click to choose it.
- 2Leave the target format on WebP.
- 3Click convert — the photo is encoded on your device at 90% quality.
- 4Download the WebP and compare its size with the original.
Frequently asked questions
Is WebP better than JPG?
For the web, usually yes. WebP generally reaches the same visual quality as JPEG in a smaller file, and it also supports transparency and animation. JPG is still the safer choice for print and for software that predates WebP.
Why is my WebP not smaller than the JPG?
A JPG that was already heavily compressed has little left to save, and re-encoding it at 90% quality can even produce a slightly larger file. In that case keep the JPG, or lower its quality with the image compressor instead.
Does converting JPG to WebP lose quality?
Slightly, because both formats are lossy and the image is encoded a second time. At 90% quality the difference is not visible in normal use, but always convert from the highest-quality original you have.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser and the photo never leaves your device.
