How to use the Break-Even Calculator
The break-even point is where sales cover all costs and profit is zero. Each sale contributes its price minus its variable cost toward the fixed costs. Divide the fixed costs by that contribution and you have the number of units. Add a target profit to see how many units it takes to earn it.
- 1Enter your fixed costs for one period, such as a month.
- 2Enter the price and the variable cost per unit.
- 3Optionally add a target profit.
- 4Read the units and revenue you need.
Frequently asked questions
What is the break-even formula?
Break-even units = fixed costs / (price per unit - variable cost per unit). With fixed costs of 5,000, a price of 50 and a variable cost of 30, that is 5,000 / 20 = 250 units.
What counts as a fixed cost and what as a variable cost?
Fixed costs stay the same however much you sell, such as rent, salaries and software. Variable costs grow with each sale, such as materials, packaging, shipping and payment fees.
Why is the break-even number rounded up?
You cannot sell part of a unit, and rounding down would leave the costs not quite covered. So 249.2 units becomes 250.
What if the variable cost is higher than the price?
Then each sale loses money and there is no break-even point. Raise the price or cut the cost per unit.
