How to clean up ChatGPT text for social media

AI chat tools write in Markdown. When you paste that text into Instagram, LinkedIn or X, the formatting does not carry over. You get stray asterisks and hash signs instead, plus a few characters you cannot see at all.

Updated

What usually comes along with the text

  • Markdown marks: double asterisks around bold words, hash signs before headings, backticks and links written as [text](url).
  • Invisible characters such as zero-width spaces, byte order marks and soft hyphens. They can break hashtags and make words impossible to search.
  • Curly quotes and apostrophes, which some platforms and fonts show oddly.
  • Em dashes and en dashes, which many readers now take as a sign of AI text.
  • Double spaces, trailing spaces and runs of blank lines.

Clean it in one pass

The cleaner turns Markdown links into the link text followed by the address in brackets, and turns asterisk bullets into round bullets. It removes invisible characters but keeps the joiners that hold emoji sequences together, so family and flag emoji stay intact. Emoji removal is optional.

  1. Paste the text into the caption cleaner.
  2. Turn on the fixes you want: Markdown, invisible characters, quotes, dashes, spacing.
  3. Choose whether to keep hashtags in place, move them to the end without duplicates, or remove them.
  4. Copy the cleaned caption.

Then fix the line breaks for Instagram

Instagram can still drop blank lines after cleaning. Run the result through the line break fixer if the post should keep its paragraphs. Keep this order: the cleaner removes the invisible blank character that the fixer adds.

Read it once more

Cleaning fixes characters, not wording. Read the post aloud before you publish and cut anything you would not say yourself.
