How to use the VTT to SRT Converter

WebVTT files from YouTube, Zoom, transcription tools and web players often carry things SRT does not understand: a header, NOTE comments, STYLE blocks, cue settings such as position and alignment, and voice tags. This converter removes those, numbers every cue, writes timestamps with commas and adds the hour when the file left it out.

  1. 1Paste the VTT subtitles or open the .vtt file.
  2. 2Check the converted SRT and the cue count.
  3. 3Download the .srt file or copy the text.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my video editor not accept a VTT file?

Many editors and desktop players only import SubRip. VTT and SRT look alike, but VTT has a header, dots in the timestamps and optional cue settings, which those programs reject. Converting to SRT fixes the import.

What happens to speaker names in voice tags?

Voice tags such as <v Sam> are removed, along with class tags and karaoke timestamps. The spoken text stays. If you need the name on screen, add it to the text before converting.

Are position and alignment settings kept in the SRT?

No. SRT has no standard place for them, so cue settings such as align:start or position:10% are dropped. The text and timing are unchanged.

Can I convert YouTube auto captions with this?

Yes, if you download them as .vtt. Auto captions often repeat lines across cues for the rolling effect, and those repeats stay in the SRT because each cue is converted as it is.
