How to use the VAT Calculator

VAT is easy to get wrong in reverse. To find the net price inside a gross price, you divide by 1 plus the rate; you do not subtract the rate from the gross. This calculator does both directions, shows the formula it used, and has presets for the standard and reduced rates of 13 countries, with a field for any other rate.

  1. 1Choose whether to add VAT or remove it.
  2. 2Enter the net or gross amount.
  3. 3Pick a country and rate, or type your own rate.
  4. 4Read the net, VAT and gross amounts and copy the summary.

Worked examples

Remove 19% VAT from 119

Find the net price and the VAT inside a gross price of 119 at the German standard rate.

Input

Mode: Remove VAT
Gross amount: 119
Rate: 19%

Output

Net: €100.00
VAT: €19.00
Gross: €119.00
  • Net = 119 / 1.19 = 100.
  • VAT is the gross minus the net, not 19% of the gross.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove VAT from a price?

Divide the gross price by 1 plus the rate. At 20% VAT, 120 / 1.2 = 100 net, so the VAT is 20. Subtracting 20% of 120 would give 96, which is wrong.

How do I add VAT to a net price?

Multiply the net price by 1 plus the rate. At 19% VAT, 100 × 1.19 = 119 gross, of which 19 is VAT.

Are the country VAT rates up to date?

They are the standard and main reduced rates as of 2026. Some goods and services have special rates or exemptions, so check with your tax office for those.

Is VAT the same as US sales tax?

No, but the maths for adding a percentage is the same. Enter your sales tax rate as a custom rate to add it to a price or take it out.
