og:image size and format requirements per platform

Use 1200 by 630 pixels, save as JPG or PNG, and keep the file under 300 KB. That one image works on every major platform. The rest of this page is the detail behind that answer.

Updated

The size that works everywhere

  • Dimensions: 1200 x 630 pixels, a ratio of 1.91 to 1.
  • Format: JPG for photos, PNG for text and flat graphics.
  • File size: under 300 KB.
  • URL: absolute and on HTTPS, such as https://example.com/og/home.png.

Limits per platform

  • Facebook: recommends 1200 x 630, accepts a minimum of 200 x 200, and allows up to 8 MB. Below 600 pixels wide the preview shrinks to a small thumbnail.
  • LinkedIn: recommends 1200 x 627 and allows up to 5 MB.
  • X: the summary_large_image card uses a 2 to 1 ratio, with a minimum of 300 x 157 and a maximum of 4096 x 4096 and 5 MB. A 1200 x 630 image is cropped by a few pixels at the top and bottom.
  • WhatsApp: publishes no limit. Images under 300 KB show reliably, and large files often give no preview.
  • Slack and Discord: read og:image and scale it to fit. No extra requirements.
  • iMessage: reads og:image and crops it towards the centre.

The tags

The width and height tags let a platform lay out the preview before the image has downloaded, which matters the first time a link is shared. The twitter:card tag tells X to use the large layout.

Formats to avoid

  • SVG. No major platform shows it.
  • WebP and AVIF. X and Facebook accept WebP, but support in messaging apps is uneven. JPG and PNG work in all of them.
  • Animated GIF. Most platforms show the first frame only.

Design for the crop

  • Keep the logo and text in the middle 80 percent of the image. Some apps crop to a square or trim the edges.
  • Use large text. A preview is often shown at 400 pixels wide or less.
  • Check the image on a dark and a light background, since chat apps use both.

If the image still does not show

The usual causes are a relative URL, an image behind a login, or a cached old preview. The link preview guide on this site covers each one.
