How to use the SRT to VTT Converter

SRT is the subtitle format most editors export. Browsers only play WebVTT in the HTML5 track element, so web video needs a .vtt file. This converter adds the WEBVTT header, switches the timestamps from commas to dots, and removes SRT styling that web players would show as text, such as position codes like {\an8} and font tags. Italic, bold and underline tags are kept.

  1. 1Paste your SRT subtitles or open the .srt file.
  2. 2Choose whether to keep the cue numbers as VTT cue IDs.
  3. 3Check the preview and the cue count.
  4. 4Download the .vtt file or copy the text.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my video player need VTT instead of SRT?

The HTML5 track element only reads WebVTT. Most web players, including the browser default player and many players built on it, expect a .vtt file. SRT works in desktop players and video editors, so you often need both.

Does converting SRT to VTT change the timing?

No. Every cue keeps the same start and end time. Only the millisecond separator changes from a comma to a dot, which is part of the format.

What happens to {\an8} and other position codes in SRT?

They are removed. These codes come from the SSA format and are not part of WebVTT, so a web player would show them as text. Plain HTML-style italic, bold and underline tags stay.

Should I keep the cue numbers?

It is optional. WebVTT allows a cue identifier above each timing line, so the SRT numbers can stay. Most players ignore them, and leaving them out gives a smaller file.
